The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, known as the CARES Act, provides for expanded unemployment benefits. If you have been laid off or have had your hours reduced due to COVID-19, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. You may also be able to qualify if you are unable to work because you have been told to quarantine or self-isolate, you are caring for a family member with COVID-19 or you are looking after a child whose school was closed. Amongst other provisions, CARES Act provides an additional $600 per week through July 31st on top of the amount offered by each state’s unemployment program, and expands unemployment benefits to self-employed individuals.
