The Boy Scouts of America Lawsuit | Scouting for Justice
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has been around for more than 100 years and it has recently grown to be one of the largest youth organizations in the United States. Boy scouts are trained to respond to many challenges and problems; however, unbeknownst to these scouts there were pedophiles who were Boy Scout Leaders. For the past couple of years, the Boy Scouts have faced multiple lawsuits where they have had to confront young boy scouts that were sexually abused by their adult scout leader.
The Blacklist | Boy Scouts Sexual Abuse Lawsuit
The Boy Scouts of America became aware of various instances of children being sexually abused in their programs since the mid-1900s, so they decided to start keeping track of an originally non-disclosed list of the scout masters and other personnel that abused these children. The list dates as far back as 1965 and reportedly contains over 1,200 files documenting instances of child sex abuse known to the BSA. This repulsive list, appropriately named the “perversion files”, was meant to stop the men and women that committed these atrocities from joining the Boy Scouts again as personnel.
The problem with this list, however, is that not only can it not undo the damages that have been done to the young scouts, but also that in multiple instances it failed to prevent more damage from being done. Reports say that at least in 50 occasions troop masters that accused children later re-entered the BSA. One of the most disturbing cases shows a scout master being expelled in 1970 for abusing a 14 year old boy in Indiana, only to be accepted back in to two separate troops between 1971 and 1988 in Illinois, allowing him to molest more than one hundred boys over the course of almost two decades before facing 100 years of jail time.
Justice & Transparency| Boy Scout Lawsuit Attorneys
In 2010, in Portland, Oregon, there were multiple lawsuits over child abuse done by scout leaders which allowed courts to use the “perversion files” as pieces of evidence to reach a verdict. However, these files were kept hidden from the public by the Boy Scouts and under seal by the court. That was until 2012 when the Oregon Supreme Court decided to approve the release of more than 1,200 files containing information about offenders and their acts of sexual abuse while being scout masters. The Los Angeles Times has gone a step further and compiled a list of about 5,000 men and women that were expelled from the Boy Scouts under the suspicion of sexual abuse of minors. The list shows the names of the abusers, the locations of the troops, and the date the file was created.
Seeking Justice | Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Boy Scouts
After spending more than $150 million in legal fees and settlements between 2017 and 2019, the Boy Scouts of America were forced to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy in order to have enough cash to handle the last wave of lawsuits. A financial breakdown of the organization revealed that over $1 billion worth of assets could be used to pay compensation for damages in future cases. In court filings, the Boy Scouts claims it faces 275 abuse lawsuits in state and federal courts around the country, plus another 1400 potential claims, and that it has paid $150 million in settlements and legal costs from 2017 to 2019.
