A first-time event in Weston will provide plenty of opportunities for local residents to volunteer and help the community.
The Mitzvah Fair at Temple B'Nai Aviv on Oct. 21 will bring together about 50 agencies, secular and non-secular, including Jewish Family Service, the Daily Bread Food Bank, the Humane Society of Broward, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Red Cross.
The groups will be happy to talk to bar and bat mitzvah candidates to help them focus on mitzvah projects. The event - from 11.30am to 1pm - is open to everyone.
There should be something at the event for everyone, organizers said.
"We want to provide our entire congregation with volunteer opportunities in the community," said Ellen Pilelsky Oppenheim, chairwoman of the social action committee at B'Nai Aviv. "We want to show the community what's available in voluntary work."
Oppenheim, a Weston resident and attorney, said the event is timely, considering the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. People are looking for ways to help, she said.
"Also, it will help students who need to complete service hours besides fitting the needs of children looking for mitzvah projects," Oppenheim said.
Typical mitzvah projects range from helping out in a soup kitchen, entertaining residents in nursing homes, working with the mentally disabled, raising funds for training therapy dogs for the Humane Society, and participating in food drives. There should be something at the event for everyone, organizers said.
The Mitzvah Fair includes a blood drive and a book drive.
