FORMER
MARLIN BASEBALL PLAYER, BENITO SANTIAGO
SETTLES WITH INSURANCE COMPANY
Fort Lauderdale,
FL
- Almost two years after a serious car accident that injured former
Marlin baseball player, Benito Santiago and a friend, Francisco
Arroyo, Santiago's insurer has agreed to settle Santiago's claim.
Santiago's attorney, Roy D. Oppenheim of Ft. Lauderdale announces
that Truck Insurance Exchange will reimburse Santiago $865,000
in connection with his recent settlement with Francisco Arroyo.
Santiago and Arroyo were injured when the car driven by Santiago
was involved in an accident. Arroyo had serious leg injuries and
Santiago suffered a broken vertebra. Santiago, who is currently
a free agent, a former Marlin, and played last season with the
Chicago Cubs, needed almost a year of therapy before he was able
to play baseball again.
Originally
Truck Insurance Exchange declined to pay Arroyo's medical expenses,
contending the Ferrari operated by Santiago wasn't insured under
its policy.
Subsequently, Santiago offered to pay Arroyo $1.1-million of his
own money to settle Arroyo's lawsuit.
In connection
with the pending lawsuit, Oppenheim stated, "I do believe
it was in everyone's interest to settle and to minimize the financial
burden to Mr. Santiago. We are extremely pleased with the outcome."
Santiago says
he's relieved to put the whole incident behind him. "I am
relieved that my attorneys, Roy Oppenheim and Alan Rosenberg were
able to resolve this matter with my insurance company," stated
Mr. Santiago. "I am very pleased that Truck Insurance Exchange
has taken care of me and my friend, Francisco. I can now focus
on my baseball and my free agency status."
In addition
to the settlement, Mr. Arroyo was also paid $100,000 by AllState
Insurance. Under the terms of the insurance policy, Santiago is
still responsible for $150,000 owed to Mr. Arroyo.
