News Alert!-
Butterfly Ballot Update National Accounting Firm tells Florida
Supreme Court a new Election can be held quickly in Palm Beach
County
Miami,
FL (November 28, 2000) -- The national accounting firm Grant
Thornton signed an affidavit today informing the Florida Supreme
Court that it can supervise a re-vote for President of the United
States in Palm Beach County to be conducted on December 1, 2000
with results certified no later than the next day by 5:00PM. Grant
Thornton says the election would be held through the use of paper
ballots, and says it will man each precinct. Only those people
who voted in the Presidential contest November 7, 2000 would be
eligible to take part in this re-vote.
Yesterday,
the Florida State Supreme Court said it would rule on whether
there should be a re-vote based on voters' complaints that the
so-called "butterfly ballot" used in the November 7 election was
confusing. The Court, responding to a handful of lawsuits by disenfranchised
voters, ordered legal briefs by 5pm today. The affidavit by Grant
Thornton, the nation's sixth largest accounting firm, was included
in those briefs. Weston attorney Roy Oppenheim of Oppenheim Pilelsky
was assigned the task of refuting all arguments that a re-vote
couldn't be accomplished in acceptable time. "We did our job,
" said Oppenheim. "Grant Thornton's affidavit proves that a re-vote
can be accomplished quickly and fairly."
The
voters' lawsuits, which were consolidated into the case before
the State Supreme Court, is being handled by attorney David Krathen
of the Law Offices of David Krathen in Weston and attorney Gary
Farmer from Gillespie, Goldman, Kronengold, & Farmer in Ft. Lauderdale.
Because
neither the Democratic nor Republican parties are participating
in this lawsuit, a trust fund has been set up to pay for all legal
fees and costs. You can get more information at www.butterflyballotfund.com
which will be up and running within 24 hours.
